Posted On: May 19, 2012 (17:08:52)

The Alexandria Firefighters Assoc. Local 540 (aka: Blazin' Saddles) competed in the 2nd Annual Dragon Boat Races in Alexandria on May 12, 2012.  This competition benefitted the Alexandria Museum of Art.  Even though the Blazin' Saddles finished 16th out of 42 teams, it was a good result for our first time out.  We are already looking forward to next year.

The Kiwanis Club named its firefighter of the year Thursday. Alexandria Fire Department fire equipment operator Ricky Nall received the award during a luncheon Thursday afternoon. Organizers say Nall was chosen, not for a single act of heroism, but for noticing a need and fixing it. Nall developed a new mapping system to help first responders get to where they need to go faster.

House Bill 204 Killed

I want to slow down for a moment and thank all of you who have responded to our requests for help over the past few weeks. We may never know the consequences of what would have happened if HB 204 had passed, and created the Public Employee Bargaining Transparency Act. While it might not have affected everyone at present, it could have in the future. This was nothing more than a union busting bill and its author was clearly anti-union.  With the help from your phone calls and emails, we were able to kill HB 204 in committee today by a vote of 8 to 7. Some committee members told us they had heard from their firefighters back home. That made the difference. While it’s imperative for us to be here at the Capitol working and watching, it’s equally important that you do what you’re doing back home when we need you.

Thanks again for your help!
